Juxtapoz Magazine on Instagram: "“Ready, Willing and Able,” 1937. “Too Marvelous for Words” is a popular song written in 1937. Johnny Mercer wrote the lyrics for music composed by Richard Whiting. It was featured in the 1937 Warner Brothers film Ready, Willing and Able and starring Ruby Keeler and Ross Alexander. It then became the love theme in the 1947 film noir Dark Passage directed by Delmer Daves, first in a version sung by Jo Stafford, then just instrumental as the love that finally reunites Lauren Bacall and Humphrey Bogart is Too Marvelous for Words indeed.” -Wikipedia via the research of @chicojefferson for #juxsaturdayschool"

42nd Street (1933), arguably the greatest musical of them all. Hardboiled, sexy, sassy, snappy plus those Busby Berkeley production numbers. It's like a delicious cocktail but with enough hard liquor in it to give it a real kick. Movie magic.

42nd Street, released in 1933, is of course the great backstage musical. This was the first of the great Warner Brothers musicals. There ha...

Bright Lights (AKA Adventures in Africa) is a fascinating pre-code oddity, a backstage musical with romance and murder. Lightweight breezy fun, a fine showcase for star Dorothy Mackaill. The Cannibal Love musical number is a highlight.

Knowledge of classic Hollywood musicals is not as widespread among today's entertainment reporters as one might hope.

(From a recent Associated Press story about the restored 1984 film 'Stop Making Sense' that showcased the Talking Heads in concert. The restored 'Stop Making Sense' opens in general release in US movie theatres on Friday.)

Vincente Minnelli’s The Band Wagon (1953), with breathtaking dancing by Fred Astaire and Cyd Charisse in glorious Technicolor.

The Band Wagon (1953)

I’ve learnt to appreciate the Hollywood musicals of the 1930s but so far I’ve resisted the lure of 1950s musicals. I have childhood memories...

I'm a big fan of Cecil B. DeMille’s comedies. My favourite is his outrageous pre-code musical sex comedy Madam Satan (1930). Zeppelins, amazing costumes, lots of pre-code naughtiness. It all adds up to delirious crazy fun.

Those who are only familiar with Cecil B. DeMille’s later films might be rather surprised by his 1930 musical sex comedy Madam Satan . If ho...

Grease (1978) is a movie I'd never seen. Not at all what I expected. It's kind of crazy, in an interesting way. The 50s and the 70s all mixed up together plus some extra weirdness. Seeing it now it has a bit of a psychotronic vibe. I liked it.
