October 26, 2013: the sunrise was ok, not as good as sunset. As expected, it was cold. The snow lingered until the early afternoon when it all melted. At lunch we said goodbye to Biner and Bernie, they're just hiking a lot slower than Pivot Dude and me. At the shelter this evening there are a lot of weekenders. They've built a fire, so I went complain too much.

Even tho we've had a few weak systems lately and slightly above average precip. for Oct., snowpacks above 3000m still skimpy. Easily evident on our Beartooth Highway hike from 2300m closure gate to 2500m. Warmer falls the last several years with long warm/dry spells between weak systems does not allow much to accumulate. It even looks here as skimpy as last year this time, when it was much drier. Cold at least -5C stiff W breeze, but warming fast. #climatechange #hiking #dogs #montana #mountains
