Wilderness/outdoor and science oriented living in and documenting the changes we are seeing with environmental/climate collapse in the GYE. Live in Red Lodge, MT since 2020 with my two helpers Sundance (the big one) and Otter (the littler one). Before that, Missoula MT (1990-98 and 2014-20), and Alaska (1998-2014, JNU/FAI/ANC). Semi-retired professional meteorologist (NWS/USFS/FWS).
Best skiing all winter really, today 22MAY at 2980m Island Lake. Moist upslope side Beartooth Plateau. Slightly above avg snowpack, because of cool spell, completely firm 1-1.5m base, 10cm thick powder on top 👍🏽. Sundance/Otter could run fast/hard on it, never postholed. 1C lite W breeze. A little clogginess on skis, but cold firm base and cloud shading helped, mostly great glide around the S of the lake, and out to W. US-212 open to it, no further. #climate #skiing #dogs #wyoming #mountains #gye

Nothing like a walk thru the woods on a snowy day...in late May ❄️. Our heaviest precip. event of the year so far had 💦💦 yest., which changed over late. 3cm 0C our place this morn., not unusual here 1700m on Beartooth Front. Got kidz out later up Willow Crk. trail 1850m-2000m then back, 10-15cm heavy wet powder in there. We probably got 30mm precip. this event, very glad. 28C possibly by Mon., happy Spring love GYE. #climate #hiking #dogs #montana #mountains #gye
Otter staged her triumphant return back into the wild today after 9 days recovery from her punctured left front paw. Short 8K Silver Run rd/trail run 1850m-2200m then back. Sundance and I are both glad have her back w us. Fairly cool spring pattern continues 10-13C and we beat TRW- forming 👍🏽. Weak upper trough may bring us some much-needed 💦❄️ tonite/tomorrow. Last one did not. APR/MAY/JUN should be wettest months Beartooth Front. #climate #running #dogs #montana #mountains #gye
Much greener and higher waters in steep narrow Clarks Fk. of Yellowstone R. Cyn since we were last in 5 weeks ago. Some wildflowers here and there, cacti not blooming yet. River in up to 1800m deep canyon drains NE quadrant of the GYE, so can get very high. And very windy when katabatic flows whip thru storm force. Quiet lite N wind today 👍🏽, 11C at 1340m start. Only saw few Bighorn Sheep way out. Bridalveil falls low due to cool spell last several days. #climate #hiking #dogs #wildlife #wyoming

Got 1km further and 200m higher up on Hellroaring Rd. during our run today than we did on 4th. Even tho there was 10cm new ❄️ above 2500m, overall snowpack melting greater. Enjoyed the -4C lite N wind where we turned back 2740m. Start in Rock Crk. Canyon 2300m. Glad there was some moisture here, but town got very little. May is wettest month Beartooth Front, much of GYE, and getting uneasy. Only 35% of avg so far in RL May precip., 57% in Apr. #climatecrisis #running #dogs #montana #gye

Although our unprecedentedly warm spell overall since last Oct. has eased slightly, it has been quite dry last 30 days. This is bad time to miss out on moisture, during green-up. Affects 🔥 potential and vegetative health. Unfortunately no real wet systems showing up in modeling next 10 days, just weak ones. Take what we can get. Green-up in full swing E Bench, behind/SE of town 1800m. Wildflower progression always nice to see. #climate #hiking #dogs #montana #mountains
One of fav. runs/scrambles is from ski area base 2250m up biking trails to 2500m, down steep narrow trail into some the Palisades rocks. The odd slabs/spires of limestone jutting up along much of Beartooth Front 2000-2500m. Razor-sharp, so don't dare slip or fall. Expansive views looking out NW-N-E. A few ❄️ patches for Sundance to cool off in still. Lite E breeze 13C at start. Not nearly as muddy as typical due to the hot/dry episode Wed. #climate #running #dogs #montana #hiking
