However the Sinatra track was recorded two month’s before the Beatles’ recording. Most of the backwards guitar on Beatles’ recordings is there for atmospheric background, and often to create the psuedo-mood of Hindustani Music, rather than intentional solos that mean something and tell a story, like the Hendrix solo on ARE YOU EXPERIENCED or Mandel’s solo on WADE IN THE WATER. Note that Glenn Campbell did not read written music - HK is guessing when he surmises that perhaps the studio copyist write out the melody for Glen backwards, in notation - and then someone could have played or sang it to Glen for him to learn on guitar. It is also possible that he just listened to the sung melody by Nancy Sinatra played backwards and then learned it that way. Many people think that Les Paul recorded the first backwards guitar solo. This is incorrect. Les Paul recorded many double-speed guitar solos - which some listeners mistake for backwards guitar. Les Paul did not record reversed tape guitar. It would be interesting to look at the history of backwards tape techniques in movie and television soundtracks; as well as in radio plays.
