The projection has the #greens gaining control of no fewer than nine boroughs currently controlled by #labour . These are #brent , #greenwich , #hackney , #hammersmithandfulham , #hounslow , #lambeth , #lewisham , #walthamforest and #wandsworth . #labour retains control of two - #newham and #redbridge . Remaining boroughs are projected to be under no overall control. This would represent the weakest position for #labour in #london since the 1968 to 1971 period.
Of the six local authorities affected one (the #CityofLondon ) is not under the control of any party. The #RoyalBoroughofKensingtonandChelsea is under #conservative control while the #RoyalBoroughofwindsorandmaidenhead is under a #liberaldenocrat administration supported by some residents' groups. The remaining three local authorities (the #CityofWestminster , #Hammersmithandfulham and #wandsworth ) are under #labour control. The majority of the population affected lives in these last three,
By comparison #hammersmithandfulham can be regarded as something of a 'success story' for #Laɓour in #london and a serious cause of annoyance to the #conservatives . One consequence of this annoyance may well have been the conspicuous failure of #BorisJohnson when #mayoroflondon to provide funds to repair #hammersmithbridge preferring instead to waste public money on vanity projects further down the #thames - at least one of which #sadiqkhan had to cancel.
#labour won #hammersmithandfulham the same year as it did #croydon - both from the #conservatives in the 2014 council elections. Since then their political trajectories have diverged - with the latter - #croydon - having become something of an embarrassment to #Laɓour in recent years and having both faced the equivalent of bankruptcy and elected albeit narrowly a #conservative executive #mayor in 2022.
The #londonborough of #hammersmithandfulham is quite interesting politically. Under #conservative rule it was part of the ill fated #triborough experiment - along with #westminster and #kensingtonandchelsea . #hammersmithandfulham left the #triborough after #Laɓour won control of the council in 2014 - also the year when it introduced free home care. The #labour administration there thus predates the national leadership of both #jeremycorbyn and #keirstarmer .
