They had no alternative because mail uses classical style federation, in which provider always has metadata to perform service.
In contrast, there is a web style federation, in which vendor isn't given communication metadata.

HOPE and Alternative Social Media

Editor’s note: This is a reflection on the recent Hackers on Planet Earth conference by ASM researcher Jamie Theophilos.

It was a great hope this year. Met up with a lot of old friends and made a bunch of new ones! Thanks to everybody that came out for my talk. After this weekend we have two major projects in the pipeline. #hope16 #hope

Has been years since I created this account and just as long since my last post.

Attended #hope16 virtually and finally got around to following many interesting and amazing people curating my home.

I learned that this is an amazing tool as long as I keep it on my home feed. The live feeds on this instance are… interesting.

The last time I was on this instance, I was chatting with a friend. That friend is currently in hospice and nearing the end of his battle with cancer.

Thoughts on HOPE_16

I’m on the train back to Montreal from New York, where I attended HOPE_16 over the weekend. I wanted to capture some thoughts while they were fresh, even though they might not be fully formed.

HOPE (Hackers On Planet Earth) is a technology and information security conference sponsored by 2600 Magazine. The SWF had two points of presence at the event this year: I gave an hour-long talk about the Fediverse which was streamed live. We also hosted the Fediverse Village, which turned out to be […]

The Retia team met hundreds of hackers at #hope16! I gave a fun #Meshtastic talk, taught 8 hacker workshops, and we open sourced our #Nibble node design.

See you at the next one!

Another @hopeconf in the books. This was my third and most engaging one. The more I learn and the more people I meet the more fun this event becomes.

Thank you all that made this happen

I am at JFK, waiting to board my flight back from #HOPE_16 . It's been a wild weekend, in many ways better than last year. I met so many cool people, and got to shake @goldstein 's hand, whose magazine and radio show got me into hacking in the first place. I #HOPE to be back next year. Until then!

#HOPE16
Closing ceremonies about to commence at #HOPE_16 . It's been hectic today, but among other things I've been active on amateur radio and got pulled by @CanItHam into "the inaugural Kevin Mitnick Memorial Radio Net". During this process, he borrowed my HT so that @goldstein could use it. Wild.
