The GPS III Rollout Is Almost Complete, But What Is It?

Considering how integral it is to our modern way of life, you could be excused for thinking that the Global Positioning System (GPS) is a product of the smartphone era. But the first satellites act…

The U.S. Space Force officially took ownership of the GPS Next Generation Operational Control System, or OCX, from contractor RTX on July 1, 2025, yet it is still not operational!

The OCX program is a large-scale, highly complex ground control system designed to operate the most modern fleet of GPS satellites, GPS III.

The Space Force operates a fleet of 32 GPS satellites, which serve both military users and civilians. The GPS III satellites, nine of which have been launched, are more jam-resistant and precise than older variants. See my article on GPS Jamming here: https://techaptitude.substack.com/p/gps-jamming-the-risks-are-real?r=vn8b8

OCX was originally to be delivered in 2016 for a cost of $3.7 billion. The cost estimate for OCX has ballooned to nearly $8 billion, and its persistent delays have earned it a reputation within the space community as a “troubled” program. https://www.airandspaceforces.com/pentagon-eyes-canceling-troubled-gps-ground-system/ #GPS #UDSF #SpaceForce #GPSIII #OCX #Pentagon #DoD #Satellites #Navigation #Security

US military bringing jam resistance to GPS for warfighter

The Space Force’s multidecade push to harden GPS against jamming and spoofing threats is poised for a pivotal breakthrough in 2025. After years of costly delays, all three legs of the antijam architecture—satellites, ground control, and user equipment—are finally coming together, as reported by Air & Space Magazine.
