I said, "You don't look much like your profile pic."

"Who does? Anyway, the info's accurate."

"You love swimming, sushi and sailors, at least drowning them?" I eyed her #gills and pointed teeth. "I'm absolutely sure that's true."

I learned to live where breath should not be possible.

This is what unsettles me now. Not that he held me under — though perhaps he did –

but that I adapted. That my body — faithful, treacherous thing — refused extinction. That even in the sea of this reckoning, something in me altered as I slipped by the geometry of hunger, as I filtered shock into oxygen.

And now, on land again, the air feels thin. My gills still pulse with the memory of depth.
