“We rob these girls of their humanity and make them into slaves… #GermanLitMonth @neglectedbooks @bhousepress

My final read of the month is my fourth one for German Literature Month; I would have liked to have squeeze in more for that event, and *did* have a plan to spend time with a particular chunkster. However, it wasn't chiming with my mood and then a lovely review copy arrived from Recovered Books which fitted in with GLM and frankly I couldn't resist!

“… a vast machinery of officialdom…” #GermanLitMonth #kafka #walterbenjamin

To round off German Lit Month's Kafka week, I though I would swerve off in a different direction from the actual writings of the man himself by writing about another author translated from the German - Walter Benjamin. I was browsing through his works and realised that he had actually written essays about Kafka, and I have two in a collection on the TBR - …

“Guilt is never to be doubted.” #kafka #germanlitmonth

I have been following along with the German Lit Month posts, and there have been some very interesting ones so far. This week is designated for reading some Franz Kafka, and I had a bit of a think plus a rummage on the stacks to see what I had available. As you will see from the image at the bottom of this page, I have plenty of Kafka options, and as the bulk of my reading of his work took place decades ago, any…

“…towards light and wonder…” #hermannhesse #thejourneytotheeast #germanlitmonth #novnov2024

November is a month stuffed full of reading events, and I must confess that although I enjoy taking part in these, it's always rather lovely when a book counts for both of them! And I have got lucky today, as I've been revisiting a book which I don't think I've picked up since my twenties: "The Journey to the East" by Hermann Hesse (translated here from the German by Hilda…

“He had already been so long in the world…” #awholelife #germanlitmonth #novnov23

My second read for German Lit Month is again a book which also qualifies for Novellas in November; and appropriately enough it was a very kind gift from the host of GLM, Lizzy from Lizzy's Literary Life (Volume 2). If you saw my end of October round-up, you'll know that we had a lovely meet up and book shop when I visited Edinburgh last month, and whilst in an Oxfam Bookshop, she stumbled…

My fourth #GermanLitMonth book, my second for Austria, makes a nice pair with Schachinger's Echtzeitalter: Die Inkommensurablen, by Raphaela Edelbauer.
