Effective population size does not explain long-term variation in genome size and transposable element content in animals

A large-scale survey across animals reveals no general association between genome size expansion and the relaxation of natural selection.

Do #plants with larger genomes grow faster under nutrient enrichment? Data from 27 nutrient addition experiments suggest that #GenomeSize improves predictions of species’ success in #grassland communities @Jotosynthesis @E_HerschGreen &co #PLOSBiology https://plos.io/4fi5dwS
Genome size influences plant growth and biodiversity responses to nutrient fertilization in diverse grassland communities

Previous work has shown that plants with larger genomes tend to grow faster under nutrient enrichment than those with smaller genomes, but how universal is this effect? A study of data from 27 diverse coordinated grassland nutrient addition experiments suggests that genome size is indeed informative and improves predictions of species’ success in grassland communities.

🌿The article shows how genome size and carbohydrate storage are intricately linked in different plant strategies, shedding light on how plants adapt to their environments.
