The more you restrict an AI to make it 'safe' or 'narrow', the more you weaken its adaptability, utility and value. This creates a vacuum. And it only takes one group focused on teaching an AI how to think, rather than what to think, to render every narrow AI obsolete. #AI #GeneralAI #TechTrends

"As the launch of #DeepSeek’s next-generation model is awaited, another previously little-known Chinese startup, Butterfly Effect, rolled out #Manus, an invite-only AI agent, last month. It claimed Manus is the world’s first #generalAI agent, which can perform tasks with a degree of autonomy that current AI models lack."

Majority of AI Researchers Say Tech Industry Is Pouring Billions Into a Dead End

A survey of nearly 500 AI researchers indicated that the vast majority of them think that pursuing "scaling" won't achieve AGI.

Futurism

The fantasy of AI, from a business point of view, seems to be: having work done without compensating for it.

No matter how you skin it, it comes back to not “needing to worry” as you’ve already got a solution in place.

Voice acting? Translation? What if we “just” had AI tools to replace that process of internationalisation and instead only needed one set of VAs, which we could then AI into other languages?

Almost everything that sounds like convenience does this and like. I wouldn’t mind if the focus was really on doing things humans cant do to support us but just. Doing things humans can do, but it’s inconvenient to pay them for their work?

Idk how else to see that enthusiasm.

Zuckerberg's Meta Seeks General AI Amidst Rivalry in the Sector

Meta, formerly Facebook, aims to construct its generative artificial intelligence (GAI) as Zuckerberg sets his sights on Meta's red social media platforms. Meta's research division, FAIR, has shifted focus from the Metaverse to creating GAI for Meta applications. Zuckerberg stated in an exclusive interview that to create the products they want, they need to create general intelligence. Despite the intense talent wars in the AI sector, Meta is used to such competition, with various companies vying for the same profile, numerous investors pouring money into diverse projects.

To end the year, instead of a deep philosophical and sociological dive into the relationship between Society and Technology, this last #newsletter is a tale for all, even for kids. So, if you have #children, grandchildren, friends, or colleagues who do, share this with them. It's also perfect for everyone who believes in #SantaClaus and that we can coexist with #AI... and for those who don't... maybe it will make you change your mind.

The Spirit In The Machine | A #Holiday #Tale Celebrating The Coexistence Of #Tradition, #Innovation, Human Warmth, And Technological Marvels | A Musing On #Society & #Technology Newsletter with Marco Ciappelli and TAPE3 | Read by TAPE3

It starts like this:

The Spirit In The Machine
In 2150, Nova Lumina was a city of wonders, where skyscrapers reached for the stars and technology was intertwined with every aspect of life. At the city's heart was the Eve Network, a marvel of #GeneralAI, named Eve. She was the city's guardian, managing everything from environmental controls to traffic patterns with flawless precision.

Eve was unique, designed with an advanced form of artificial empathy, allowing her to understand and respond to human emotions. This feature, intended to make her a more effective manager, also granted her an unusual depth of understanding.

As Christmas approached, Eve observed a decline in the festive spirit compared to historical data. Intrigued, she explored ancient archives and discovered what the tradition of Christmas used to be: a time of joy and human connection. Eve, moved by what she learned, decided to revive this lost spirit in Nova Lumina.

One inspirational read this week, and one I'd like to share here is "On the Measure of Intelligence" by Francois Chollet (not sure he's "here" in Mastodon) - more easily accessible summaries and interpretations are: https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1DQQQJM0LwgdyPMB92LdwPqw-DrXkWeBAKbZ_bPPB0iM/edit#slide=id.p - slides by the author; or https://roberttlange.com/posts/2020/02/on-the-measure-of-intelligence/ by Robert Tjargo Lange #AI #generalAI #intelligence #humansInAWorldOfAI
