I edited down a game I played online with my students back in 2021 down to 12 minutes. The system is modified FU RPG.

I hope the resultant narrative in the video makes sense.

RPGs IN EDUCATION CONSULTATION

Wednesday afternoon RPG session with schoolchildren at Bukit Jalil using #YearZeroMini and my own Omega Librarians setting. This valuable book retrieval team crashed in Florida flying through a storm, then appropriated a Lear Jet to reach Columbus, Ohio to meet a contact.

But upon discovering their contact has been abducted, the police arrive to arrest them for breaking and entering.

Anyone - especially a teacher - could GM a class to use #ttrpg for language learning.

A teacher would already know a) how to manage a classroom of students, b) what your course outcome should be. With RPGs, you should be able to do (a) by doing (b) using the RPG rules as a course framework.

All we need to do is to craft the framework based on what skills we want the students to develop.

Can you tell which game this email was about? 😛

============================

Like a lot of speed games, it does kind of get ruined if one person is LOADS better than everyone else and scores all the cards. It doesn't matter if it takes the kids a while to count, just that everyone is broadly on the same page.

Unlike most other speed games, because it keeps getting trickier, a small difference in skill will still give 'weaker' players some moments of satisfyingly slapping cards correctly. And if you know ahead of time who will be faster, give them some 'extra obligations' for counting. One or two (or even three?) extra cards will slow them down. Those cards don't count for purposes of winning, won't go away after a mistake, but DO need to be counted before you shout the number and slap the central card.

In a school setting, maybe: whenever you win 2 games in a row, you get another 'champion card' - the obligations mentioned above.

VIDEO: That time I ran a modified Year Zero Mini #ttrpg session for my teaching colleagues during COVID-19 lockdown. They played agents on a mission in contemporary Germany.

I conducted an interview with our guest GM from Pulau Pinang, Danial earlier today at the gardens behind the university library. It's about 9 minutes long. Enjoy!

#QuestRPG at work with guest GM Danial from Penang. I didn't play; I only organised it and monitored the video camera. Out of five players (all educators), three were newbies. But they enjoyed the session and roleplayed well.
