Group screams offer a unique outlet to relieve stress, frustration or grief
Can you scream your way to happiness? Maybe not, but the scream clubs popping up around the U.S. promise some relief. Manny Hernandez is the co-founder of the first Scream Club in Chicago. He says the group screams help people relieve stress and frustration when people are going through hard times. Participants typically start with a vocal warm-up like humming followed by a breathing exercise. Then they scream together three times, each one more intense than the last. Harvard Medical School psychiatry professor Ashwini Nadkarni says primal scream therapy that was popular in the 1970s isn’t an effective way to treat mental health; however, she says Scream Club still offers several benefits, including temporary stress relief and a sense of community.
