A rare me actually doing my kinda stuff post: I was able to pick up the Future and Reality of Games anthology for 2022 at #Frog2023 this past weekend.
The title is Freedom, Oppression, Games and Play, and it includes a chapter by me on reimagining medievalisms in computer RPGs using a less western European societal model.

Another one from #frog2023: the problems of mobile games as de facto gambling can in part be summed up with this dramatic statistic: a twentieth do 2/3 of the spend. Profits require small numbers of players spending damaging sums.
In a study of young Austrian players (10-19) more male players spent on in app purchases and those who did spent much more: ca 180eur per annum versus ca 100 for girls. The "high rollers" with super high spending were 80 percent male.
This graph is absolutely wild, from a #frog2023 talk on data centres. Heat use for efficiency is talked about a lot with the data centres for gaming, cloud computing, and generative models, but there's minimal evidence that this will slow this curve: we need radical decreases in how much power computing is using, and we need urgent legislative action to achieve that.
