In 2010, a pipeline rupture caused a massive spill of diluted bitumen (dilbit) in Michigan, polluting almost 65 km of waterways. A recent report on the environmental impact of the spill underscores the importance of preparedness and research in managing the risks of transporting dilbit through freshwater ecosystems.
