Black August is a month-long commemoration of Black resistance, paying tribute to the lives and sacrifices of freedom fighters, especially those trapped inside prison cells. It was first observed by prisoners at San Quentin in 1979 to commemorate the deaths of Khatari Gaulden, George Jackson, and other Black political prisoners. In the words of Mumia Abu Jamal, Black August is "a month of injustice and divine justice; of repression and righteous rebellion; of individual and collective efforts to free the slaves, and break the chains that bind us."

On Thursday, August 27th, we'll be hosting a discussion on the significance and relevance of Black August with organizer dequi kioni-sadiki and former Black Panther Harold Taylor in conversation with recently-freed political prisoner Eric King. They'll explore the anti-carceral roots of Black August and the ongoing importance of support for imprisoned revolutionaries.

Register for the event and find a copy of "Rattling the Cages: Oral Histories of North American Political Prisoners" at https://firestorm.coop/events/3257-rattling-the-cages-black-august-prisoner-support.html. If you missed the first three events in the series, you can now stream them on our YouTube channel.

Rattling the Cages: Black August & Prisoner Support

In this fourth Rattling the Cages panel talk, Eric King, dequi kioni-sadiki, and Harold Taylor discuss the significance and relevance of Black August today, and the importance of political prisoner support.

It's been a little over a month since the upsetting news that #KhalifMiller was given a 1-10 year state sentence on top of the 61 month (5 year) Federal sentence that he has been serving since October of 2020.

Khalif is one of the five people indicted along with #AntSmith for his participation in the racial justice uprisings in 2020. He is facing a total of 15 years for attending a protest on May 30th, 2020. This is the new COINTELPRO!

We're rehashing this 6/1 post from the @FreeAntPHL IG account to bring Khalif back to the top of your feed.

Send him some β™₯️ at:

The Case of Mumia Abu-Jamal: An Innocent Man on Death Row – On a Move

The Sentence
6/7 Due to police manipulation of witnesses, fabrication of evidence, and the rights of the defense severely denied, Mumia was found guilty. He was sentenced to death during the penalty phase based solely on his political beliefs. Mumia has been unjustly separated from his family for twenty-two years, with the threat of death looming over his head. β†’

5/6 THE TRIAL
The trial began in 1982 with Judge Sabo (who sent more people to death row than any other judge) presiding. Mumia wished to represent himself &got John Africa as his legal advisor but before jury selection had finished, this right was revoked & an attorney was forcibly appointed for him. Throughout the trial, Mumia was accused of disrupting court proceedings & was not allowed to attend most of his own trial. Sabo lived up to his nickname of β€œProsecutor in Robes.
