In the US, some private prison operators have special understandings with local law enforcement. As far as I can tell, the result is a private company managed to interfere with the Rule of Law in the United States, leaving many at the Otay Mesa immigration centre vulnerable to complete lawlessness.

What Canadians may be seeing in the US? Literally holes forming in our neighbour where law has stopped functioning.

In some jurisdictions, the police would act as basically an office holder when they decide when a piece of legislation was violated, and to lay charges against an individual. Police are agents or employees of the state when they are not exercising this special authority to charge people with offences. When the charge is laid, the prosecutors take over the file. But now you’re saying that the police no longer want to use that special function - the reason why they exist - and they hand it to a private company with their own interests beyond the Justice System?

This isn’t the Justice System any longer, this is collapse.

Why a private company is investigating rapes at an ICE detention center instead of the sheriff

The warden at a privately run immigrant detention center in San Diego County has authority to decide how to investigate rape reports there. A San Diego County supervisor wants to revisit the agreement giving that power to CoreCivic.

Montreal-based security firm wins lucrative contract for ICE detention facility in Arizona

A U.S. subsidiary of GardaWorld, a security firm headquartered in Montreal, recently won a contract worth up to $1 billion to develop and carry out some operations at a new detention centre in Arizona. It’s not the firm’s first involvement in facilities like this in the U.S. — involvement that’s raising questions north of the border.

This story is deeply disturbing. It is absolutely inexcusable and unconstitutional to deny incarcerated people access to their attorneys for more than 2 months.

P..S. The phone system work-around is NOT suffixient, because calls made to attorneys in this way are being recorded, which violates attorney-client privilege.
