I keep seeing ads for “farmer boxes” full of fruit and veg “the supermarkets won’t buy” because they’re not pretty enough. Supposedly, you’re saving them from the bin.
I grew up rural. This is a whole heap of marketing bullshit.
Ugly produce isn’t just thrown out. It gets turned into juice, soup, puree, baby food, tinned goods, or animal feed. In countries with robust agricultural systems (like Australia or the Netherlands, the ones I know), waste is minimized through alternative markets and processing streams.
What these boxes are really doing is reselling stuff that was already going to be used. Just not as fresh market produce.
You’re not “rescuing” food. You’re just buying seconds, all.put on you with a feel-good marketing spin.
Support local farmers please, but don’t fall for the guilt bait.
