HTC is sending its VR headset to a NASA astronaut, here's why

HTC has partnered with XRHealth and Nord-Space Aps to send a VR headset to astronauts in space for mental health therapy during their upcoming mission. The VIVE Focus 3 headset has been designed to be compatible with microgravity conditions. Danish astronaut Andreas Mogensen will be the first to use the VR headset for preventative care during his NASA Crew-7 mission. This initiative aims to address the mental health needs of astronauts living in isolated and stressful environments in space.

A standalone VR-Headset like the #Focus3, #Quest2 or #Pico4 is nothing more than an Android device with built-in screens, motion trackers and usually two wand controllers.

So everyone who likes #FOSS should also have F-DROID on it. I thought so and gave it a try. Awesome! Besides #Sidequest now a second source to be more independent from the official stores.

So eine Standalone VR-Brille, wie die #Focus3, #Quest2 oder #Pico4 ist im Kern nichts anderes als ein Android-Device mit eingebauten Bildschirmen, Motion-Trackern und i.d.R. zwei Zauberstab-Controller.

Folglich sollte jeder, der #FOSS mag auch F-DROID drauf haben. Dachte ich mir und machte es mal. Genial! Neben #Sidequest nun eine zweite Quelle um unabhängiger von den offiziellen Stores zu sein.

Finally got #HTC Vive #Focus3 charged enough to go through initial setup. What a nightmare.

Setup needs helper app (Vive Manager) on phone instead of in-VR. Phone app manages initial controller sync (which initially fails a few times).

App wants to OS update device, but will lose update status if switched away to another app - there's NO update status in VR display. Forced VR power-down & restart phone pair & OS update to get status back.

#VR device charges by BARREL charger instead of USB-C!
