The morning after another overnight stay - this time on the north side of the island - we boarded the boat to return to the mainland. I could have stayed a few more days on this beautiful island with its super chill vibe! But "Oh, joy, another destination to check off the list." 😂
Puno, a city at Lake Titicaca on the Peruvian side, is the place from where it's possible to go to the famous floating islands, the Uros islands. Although the internet and social media are full of images that seem very inauthentic, my desire was to see and experience the floating islands myself. Well, that was an experience that afterwards I would have rather skipped... but it was an experience!

This is how the floating islands are maintained - fresh reeds are constantly collected from the lake and transported back to reinforce the islands. It's incredible to see this traditional process that's been going on for centuries. The reeds decompose from below, so they need to be continuously replaced from above to keep the islands afloat.
