"#Jewish life persists, even 4000 feet above sea level. Before I embarked on a three month #backpacking trip across #SouthAmerica, I was unsure how I’d be able to adapt my #kosher and #Shabbat lifestyle to destinations without any Jewish infrastructure. Conversely, I discovered that in the moments when I was most geographically isolated from a Jewish community, my identity was its strongest.

I spent the first night of #Chanukah in #Peru, staying with an indigenous family on an island on #LakeTiticaca: the highest navigable lake in the world. With my travel-#chanukiah in hand, I asked my host if I could light some candles for a Jewish celebration.

Bemused by the request, and unsure what a #Jew even was, she kindly obliged..."

wrap up 2025:
January
The morning after another overnight stay - this time on the north side of the island - we boarded the boat to return to the mainland. I could have stayed a few more days on this beautiful island with its super chill vibe! But "Oh, joy, another destination to check off the list." 😂
Puno, a city at Lake Titicaca on the Peruvian side, is the place from where it's possible to go to the famous floating islands, the Uros islands. Although the internet and social media are full of images that seem very inauthentic, my desire was to see and experience the floating islands myself. Well, that was an experience that afterwards I would have rather skipped... but it was an experience!

wrap up 2025: January
Shortly before sunset, we arrived by boat in Yumani on the south side of the hilly 'Isla del Sol'.
At the landing dock, we were greeted by an Inca statue. Some say it's the statue of 'Manco Capac', the very first Inca ruler, who was born with his sister 'Mama Ocllo' from the sun god 'Inti' in Lake Titicaca.
As the boat left, we knew there was no possibility to reach the mainland until the next day... Normally no problem since we had decided freely to come to the island, but a big thunderstorm was approaching the island and we had not booked anything to stay the night.
We were lucky, met the right person who was in charge of looking after some bungalows, and could rent us a room with an amazing view over the lake, right before the heavy rain started.
The thunderstorm caused a power outage for some hours. With our headlamps, we climbed on a small rocky path through the little village on the hill to search for a place where we could have dinner. Thanks to lots of candles, we found a super cozy little restaurant that served us and other guests the best dinner we could have ever wished for in that moment 🫶
The next morning we finally could see and explore the cute village on top of the hill on the southern end of the island.
After breakfast and coffee with a view we walked (~5h / ~12km) on top of the hill to the north side of the island. It was amazing to walk over the isla del sol on an height of around 4'000m above sea level!
