Fairfield Winnipeg

Canada, Fairfield Inn, Marriott Bonvoy, Select

The Fairfield Winnipeg was exactly like Winnipeg – not exciting in any way, but it can get the job done. The hotel team was great in person and over chat, and my upgraded studio was adequate as expected.

Bed area

The hotel was recently renovated, featuring the new Fairfield carpeting and a semi-new bathroom, but some original woodgrain fixtures remained. The studio was roomy on the living room side, and a bit tighter but manageable on the bedroom side.

I enjoyed the open view on the city side, albeit it being a bit farther away, as the hotel was located a bit out of the downtown area. Public transit access was pretty bad, however parking was free and they did offer a free airport shuttle. I’d imagine a slightly less interesting view on the other side, as the only thing close by was a Walmart.

City view

Overall I thought it was a positive experience. Being a Fairfield, all I needed was a reliable place to stay and good value for money, and the Fairfield Winnipeg delivered in both aspects.

Fairfield Inn & Suites Moncton

Canada, Fairfield Inn, Marriott Bonvoy, Select

Let’s be honest, you don’t really hope for anything overly inspiring when you hear “Fairfield” or “Moncton”. With that in mind, the Fairfield Moncton is not bad at all. In fact, they had been striving for something better than fine for a long time.

Hotel exterior

The hotel was located some ways away from Moncton, but relatively close to Dieppe. It looked very unassuming from the outside. Well, for that matter, from the inside as well. Everything was in line with your typical highway hotel, minus a few wall arts showcasing some local points of interest. The room I got was a “studio suite”, albeit it was more or less just a longer room with a full-size couch instead of the normal armchair, and the extra TV which was appreciated but not exactly necessary in my opinion. That being said, the hotel had consistently upgraded my stays without me asking every single time so far, which was rare and appreciated.

“Suite” overview

The most recent renovation brought new carpeting, some new furniture as well as a brand new bathroom, but overall I found nothing unexpected from a Fairfield. The free breakfast buffet might be my only complaint, as there were mostly no fresh options, and I could taste the frozen-ness from the food on offer. The whole setup felt slightly disappointing even when compared to some other Fairfield locations.

Newly renovated bathroom

What made the hotel different was the front office team. During my stays at this hotel – most of which transient, one-night layovers – the front office team had been very consistently friendly, reliable and personable. They also went above and beyond to recognize my elite status, with extras ranging from goodie bags to handwritten welcome cards. Though small, these gestures had become unfortunately sparse across the Marriott select service portfolio in North America. They even went the extra mile proactively to help me celebrate my birthday during one of my recent stays, even though my birthday did not exactly fall into the stay.

Birthday surprise!

Again, all things considered the hard product of the hotel is nothing special. Even with the renovation finished now, the lack of visual excitement was still a problem. However, I could tell the front office team was aiming for something higher, and their effort did not go unnoticed, at least with me.

I also got to make progress on an exciting study with @[email protected], catch up with great old friends @[email protected] and @[email protected], have a late-night dinner with my lovely & awesome PhD advisor Daniel Rodriguez, learn a new trick from @Transportist, and get actual IRL time with countless colleagues I normally only see on-screen.

Despite the #FairfieldInn having zero hot water, it was a very worthwhile and inspiring #TRBAM for me.
