@KatyElphinstone #ExFundamentalist here. They have a very rigid, almost militaristic picture of what social roles should be like, and deviation from that ideal is seen as abandoning one's post of duty. The higher and more critical the role, the graver the offense. That's why gay men and trans women (male-to-female) draw more ire than lesbians and trans men (female-to-male). Males are seen as the enforcers who keep everyone else in line. For us to break ranks is seen as especially heinous.

And the question of harm? Harm is PRESUMED to follow. Its details are seen as largely irrelevant, and proof of it as unnecessary. Just as for disobeying a military order.

Martin Luther, early Lutheran, on the Centurion seeking healing of a servant (Luke 7:1-10). The Gospel is not a rest from regard for neighbor in their need, but has us brimming with love.

Some say “having the gospel” in your heart will cause you to be less distracted by the cares of the world? Are we not ever going to tell employers to love their employees more?

How can you have greater regard for your neighbors in need?

I have a new video out on the origins of Leviathan and the theme of Yahweh's combat against the sea. This motif, sometimes referred to as Chaoskampf by scholars, occurs frequently in creation-related passages in the Old Testament.

A tower named after an unknown individual in Iron Age Jerusalem. An Iron Age song celebrating Ammon's triumph over Moab. A royal seal from an unknown queen. Discrepancies in the chronology of 2 Kings. What does it all add up to? Check out my latest article for an interesting theory by the late Orientalist Giovanni Garbini.

Is That in the Bible?
Poking around mastodon to see if there are more folks who are #exFundamentalist or #exvangelical - my dad grew up in the 2x2 church and even though I was never a member, I have a lot of #ReligiousTrauma from it which I am working through in therapy. Anyway, that wasn't in my intro but is also a thing.
