In this post, I explore how creeds shifted from storytelling to systematizing, how substance ontology shaped theology (for better and worse), and why it's time to revisit doctrine through the lens of event ontology—where God is encountered in act, not defined by essence.

Creeds Part 4: Distortion, the Price of Stability

The Church’s creeds developed in response to rival interpretations that threatened to distort its own understanding of the faith. The Councils of Nicaea, Constantinople, and Chalcedon didn’t …

Funny research quandary today: I wanted to make the case that a certain medieval author used a specific word in a specific passage in order to call back to a thematically similar gospel passage.

Turns out the Vulgate uses the word, but almost every single author contemporary with mine DROPS THE SPECIFIC WORD I'M LOOKING FOR when quoting the gospel passage.

I’ve been thinking about how I often hear that the purpose of the law is to point you to Christ and how, big picture, that’s true… BUT it glosses over what a lot of verses say the point of the law is.

Deuteronomy 17:18-20 says the post is to learn to revere God, walk according to the law, and be humble.

Joshua 1:8 says the point is to walk differently.

Psalm 119 says the point is obedience and trust.

What others passages tells us the point of the law Scripture?

My church has been going through a series on the Fruit of the Spirit, which has been really good. And I wrote a piece for their blog to help people think about how to grow in those fruits more practically:

How to Bear Fruit in Your Walk with God — Cascade Christian Reformed Church

This week we have a guest post from James Fields. I thought this was a very helpful article and incredibly timely as we wrap up our series on the Fruit of the Spirit.

... Thinking about getting a NEW American Standard Bible and starting short videos reading and discussing it.

I also figure it might be an interesting thing to start with a Peertube build as I try to get back to building ideas.

@rightardia The Epic of Gilgamesh and the Bible have fascinating parallels, especially the flood story. In Gilgamesh (written around 2100 BCE), Utnapishtim is warned by the gods to build a boat and save animals from a massive flood, just like Noah in the Bible’s Genesis (written around 500–600 BCE). Both stories feature a divine warning, an ark, and a great flood. But while the Bible presents a monotheistic view, Gilgamesh involves multiple gods.
