I was playing tennis and I felt a huge weight on my chest. I remember the doctor shouting, ‘We’re losing him’”: Righetti’s account.

A career linked to Roma, a scudetto (league title) won, and some friction with Eriksson that led to his farewell: “He knew I was in pain, I had pubalgia and I couldn’t play. But he said, ‘Ubaldo, serve me, you have to stay on the field.’ He promised me he would protect me from the press. Instead, after a couple of negative performances, he said, ‘I don’t understand what this boy has.’ And he knew it perfectly well…” More than 100 appearances with the giallorossi (yellow-red) in the 1980s, Ubaldo Righetti – former footballer now 63 years old – spent 10 years between Roma’s youth and first team, and also told La Gazzetta dello Sport about when, in 2021, he risked dying.

“I was struck by a double heart attack. I was playing tennis and I felt a huge weight on my chest. I couldn’t breathe. I was operated on urgently. I remember the doctor shouting, ‘We’re losing him, we’re losing him.’ It felt like I was in a movie,” Righetti declared, recounting those days. “I didn’t have time to realize I was going to die,” the former giallorossi footballer recounted. The defibrillator also saved him: “I perfectly remember the jolt of the defibrillator, but. An enormous shock, I felt myself opening literally. Then they intubated me and it went dark.”

A night of fear, in which he several times risked not making it: “I and death met, but we didn’t like each other. I had eighteen cardiac arrests that night. My partner was told that I might not make it through the night. There was also the risk that lack of oxygen could cause damage to my brain. Then, fortunately, everything went well,” the former central defender of Roma concluded.
