February is usually the month I like to go and take a photograph or two at my favourite spot for snowdrops, although this year, largely due to the weather, I didn't think it was going to happen.
So, I was so pleased to get the chance to pay a visit this afternoon to Hawthorn Dene, Co Durham in NE England, where the annual display once again was looking quite magnificent.
Thanks to yet more overnight rain, the path through the dene was quite muddy in parts but at least it was feeling mild and spring-like at 14°C.
The snowdrops in and around Hawthorn Dene regularly draw a steady stream of visitors who also enjoy the miles of woodland and nearby coastal footpaths.

The early autumnal sun setting on Sunderland's Mowbray Park, one of the oldest municipal parks in North East England.
The origins of this popular space date back to the first half of the 19th century after a recommendation was put forward by a local health inspector that a leafy area in the town would be beneficial following the town's cholera epidemic in 1831.
To that end, a grant of £750 was put forward by the Government to buy a £2,000 plot of land from the Mowbray family for a new park.
The view captured here looks across the park's pond, framed on the right by the Winter Gardens, built as part of restoration work to restore this public amenity to its Victorian glory.
Funded by a generous £3.3 million grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund, the park and new Winter Gardens officially re-opened in 2000.

The UN cannot fulfill its mission while a state waging a war of aggression holds an unlawful veto over its decisions.

The permanent seat was created for the USSR, which ceased to exist in 1991 – Russia simply occupied it by changing a nameplate, without any legal procedure. Nowhere in the #UN Charter is Russia listed as a permanent member, and to this day, that seat remains reserved for the non-existent Union of Soviet Socialist Republics.

This contradiction undermines the UN’s credibility and blocks action to protect peace. It is absurd that those responsible for killing, sexual abuse, and abducting children occupy a seat entrusted with maintaining global security.

Russia’s Expulsion from UN An Urgent Necessity.

St Michael's Mount, near Penzance in West Cornwall, bathed in warm July sunshine (although if I'm being honest, a little warmer than was comfortable). A very enjoyable two weeks spent in one of my favourite parts of the UK.
Travelling the 500 miles back home to North East England on Saturday and the temperature was a uniform 29°C (apart from hitting 32°C in Somerset) – it was a bit depressing watching the temperature drop ten degrees on the final few miles. Now, Sunday morning has dawned with a wall to wall greyness!

Looking across to picturesque Alnmouth from Church Hill on the coast of Northumberland in North East England.
Church Hill is located on the south side of the River Aln and is surmounted by a wooden cross.
It was once part of Alnmouth itself and the parish church stood on the west side of the hill.
That all changed however, during a violent storm back in 1806.
The North Sea broke through and the course of the River Aln found a new and shorter route to the sea with the hill effectively becoming cut off from the village.
I did once attempt to cross the River Aln to Church Hill at low tide (I'd heard it could be done!).
However, finding the mud in the river becoming worryingly deeper and not entirely sure of the veracity of accounts of a safe crossing, I gave up.
I eventually reached the hill from a much longer route from the south.

Not quite sure how I managed to make Bourton-on-the-Water in the Gloucestershire Cotswolds look quite so peaceful! The day I visited back in late June, it was rammed.
Thought this moment wasn't going to happen, but for little more than a second or two, this space looked so idyllic – couldn't believe my luck!

A Sunday afternoon walk in the sunshine along the north bank of the River Wear in Sunderland, where an area of grassland has been allowed to develop into a wildflower meadow. This is near the Sir Tom Cowie Campus of Sunderland University, where cyclists on the C2C route are riding the final mile down to the seafront at Roker.

Came across some amazing angels in stone yesterday, during a visit to a cemetery at Swinton, Greater Manchester.
A graveside memorial favourite in Victorian times, seems like they're making something of a comeback!

Whenever I visit Durham (and it's easy to do as I live quite near), I love how the first glimpse of majestic Durham Cathedral comes into view as you head up the city's Saddler Street towards Palace Green.
