From the perils of social media to the weight of the climate crisis, anxieties have intensified, says freelance journalist Elle Hunt

The Guardian

I read a great opinion piece by Elle Hunt on #Octopus farming and it says all the right things:

Octopus farming turns my stomach – but are some species really more worthy than others? - https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/mar/30/octopus-farming-turns-my-stomach-but-are-some-species-really-more-worthy-than-others

You get the usual 'intelligent' thoughts in the comment section too.

I particularly liked this section:

"I’m convinced that the path forward is not making exceptions for octopuses, and other species that we deem worthy, but prioritising an inhabitable Earth for all of us. The arc of the moral universe is surely bending towards less exploitation of living beings, less net suffering – regardless of their intelligence."

And with my #vegan bias, I have to vehemently disagree with this passage:

"... and individuals eating higher-quality meat, and less of it overall – and octopus only when it’s been locally caught."

I suppose this was put in to appear moderate? In that, saying NO animal meat, and NO octopuses no matter how they are caught, was not a neutral/normal enough stance to take for #TheGuardian readers?

My best friend had a question for the reporter that was documenting the pigs in the gas chamber report on 7:30 ABC (I tooted about it previously): "So I wonder if Lauren Day (the person who reported the story) will stop eating pigs?"

In this case, the author stopped eating octopus. With other animals, despite being less exceptional, will she stop eating them too? 🐙🌱🐖

I haven’t eaten octopus in years, yet being smart shouldn’t make them exceptions. All animals need protection from unnecessary suffering, says journalist Elle Hunt
