What is alpha-gal syndrome?

Health officials are raising awareness about alpha-gal syndrome, a meat allergy triggered by tick bites. This condition is on the rise. Symptoms include hives, diarrhea and itchiness after eating meat or dairy. The allergy doesn’t impact consumption of seafood or poultry. Chicken, turkey and eggs are all OK to eat. Traditionally, treatment involves avoiding certain foods and carrying an epinephrine injector. Recently, regulators approved the first drug for this condition. Alpha-gal syndrome occurs when the immune system reacts to a sugar found in mammal meat and tick saliva. Increased awareness and the expanding range of the lone star tick are contributing to rising cases.
