I have been exploring self hosting the LLM for my #moodle #aitext question types I have experimented with on premise hosting (my spare room to be precise) and a cloud service called https://www.runpod.io.

The cloud hosting has so far cost me around $USD7.0 since 26th December. It provides 1 x Nvidia V100 FHHL 6 vCPU 31 GB RAM, and the response time is probably usable with the question type. Other similar hosting services are available.

Don’t believe everything a Large Language Model like #ChatGPT tells you. I have been experimenting with examples for my #moodle #aitext question type.

It accepts the answer X=1 rather than the correct X = 2.

The prompt was “Given the task of simplifying 3x +2 = 8. Is the following a correct solution, give reasons, indicate if the answer is wrong."

I am confident a more refined prompt would spot the error, but it shows how caution is necessary.

If instructors and school leaders seek to create schools in which practices and structures are aligned with the realities of human learning, then they must recognize certain characteristics of learners & learning.

First, the students who arrive in schools are experienced learners. Their experiences are affected by their culture, motivation, academic, and personal experiences. Any list of the relevant factors will be incomplete, and the nuances of how these have culminated in the individual entering your classroom cannot be known. Students are not blank slates, nor do they have exactly the prior knowledge you want them to have. Realize the students who entered may not be the students your wanted, but they are the students you have.

Second, learning comprises many different types of abilities and actions. While not every field requires al types of thinking and learning, every field depends on learning being able to demonstrate more than declarative knowledge. Statistical learning (based on pattens), observation (especially watching experts), perceptual learning (one’s ability to interpret as expertise develops), and design (iterative practical problem solving) are all examples of learning that teachers must facilitate.
