I'm on #strike today.
As an early career researcher on a fixed term contract, I understand why some colleagues might make a different choice, feeling that a lost day of work hurts their career personally more than it makes a statement to the university.
I think that's a bit backwards, though--when we stand together and make genuine sacrifices, that signals to our employers just now serious we are.
And don't you hope your colleagues at the next university you work at are fighting to improve conditions there as well?
#HigherEducation and #research is under attack in the UK (not to mention the US and elsewhere), and the only way we persuade governments and (certain) administrators who keep trying to squeeze more blood from the stone is to leverage the right to withdraw our labor to say #EnoughIsEnough.
We need real terms pay to stop falling. We need the same for our friends in the healthcare & rail sectors. We need the same for everyone.
