The Boeing E-3 Sentry is a flying command-and-control center. It's a tactical spy plane, designed to give commanders a sweeping, real-time picture of everything on the battlefield.
They are rare, old, and very expensive. Iran blew one up, along with some air to air refueling planes, and injuring 10-14 soldiers, numbers vary upon report, but it's getting very little airplay in American media.
