Great. First Sonic and Knuckles, now Tails had left her too!
Why did they keep running ahead without her, as though she wasn’t even there? It was as though they didn’t care about her safety at all.
Amy stopped herself. She forced herself to remember her journey on the Egg Carrier. She wasn’t some fragile damsel who needed a prince to save her. That wasn’t what Sonic was after. So she tried to change for the better, change for him, be her own hero. And over time, she realized something. Even if Sonic hadn’t been impressed, she still would have done it all over again.
She liked this new her. She escaped from Eggman’s prison, freed a robot, and even stood up to Sonic—her crush. And yet he wasn’t mad at her. She remembered reading somewhere that relationships in which both parties could disagree with each other and still come back as friends were keepers.
But aside from that time that he told her he was impressed by how she handled herself under pressure, he hadn’t really gone out of his way to talk to her. And the same pattern repeated here. Maybe he had bigger things to worry about, sure, but he was treating her as though she didn’t exist!
Amy huffed, stomping through the corridors of the Space Colony. Every room looked almost exactly the same. Lab equipment, stasis pods, computers, all repeating in a neat—she stopped. The room she had just passed was completely different. A large viewport overlooked the starry sky. In front stood a familiar hedgehog.
Shadow. Idly staring out the window as the world spun for the last time. Like a man debating whether or not he should jump off a bridge. Except, he had already made his decision, hadn’t he? He had set the world on this path to destruction, along with himself. When she first heard of him, she was inclined to think that he was nothing more than an evil clone of Sonic, a cartoon villain set on destroying the world for the sake of it.
But she'd learned that even beings that seemed most likely to be heartless, deep down, had good inside. That sometimes that bad only came to defend against people who treated them in heartless ways. That they could be good. If only the right person would treat them like they had a heart from the start.
She was used to winning battles with words. Maybe this was the battle she was supposed to win.
And maybe this time she'd be able to change his fate.
