American cemetery in Margraten removes memorials commemorating the role of black soldiers in World War II

At the American military cemetery in Margraten, Limburg, several references to the role of black Americans during the Second World War have been removed. This appears to be part of the Trump administration's fight against everything it classifies as “woke”.
The removal of the two panels from the visitor centre in Margraten took place without explanation, reports NRC. It is unclear exactly when the panels were removed. It may have happened months ago.
The panels had been on display since last year in the permanent exhibition at the visitor centre, which opened its doors in 2023. More than 8,000 American soldiers are buried in the cemetery, 172 of whom were black.
One of the panels stated that the one million men of colour who enlisted for military service during the war fought against both the enemy and persistent racism. At that time, the American army was still segregated. Black soldiers were deployed for tasks such as digging graves.
The other panel told the story of soldier George H. Pruitt, who drowned in a river in Bremen a month after the German surrender. He had tried to rescue a comrade who had fallen into the water.
The American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC), which manages American war graves and monuments outside the US, says in NRC (dutch newpaper) that there is no question of black Americans being hidden away from military history.
Panels such as the one about Pruitt were “designed to rotate regularly throughout the duration of the exhibition, so that as many individual stories as possible are featured”. The panel is not out of rotation. Questions about the other panel have not been answered.
The ABMC, based in Paris, is an independent agency of the US federal government. Earlier this year, President Trump appointed one of his key campaign advisers, Chris LaCivita, as its director.
‘Toxic ideological waste’
Trump’s Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth has openly declared war on the ‘politically correct and toxic ideological waste that has poisoned our department’. According to him, ‘woke nonsense’ stands in the way of an effective and decisive army.
'DEI is dead,' Hegseth said earlier this year, referring to the diversity and equality policy in the military under Trump's predecessor, President Biden. Hegseth then gave the go-ahead for the removal of thousands of web articles with stories and images about Black, Indigenous, gay and female veterans.
Training courses featuring videos of Black and female Air Force pilots were also scrapped. These included the Tuskegee Airmen, a squadron consisting almost entirely of Black Americans who fought in the Second World War. After public outcry, the Pentagon reversed its decision.
Theo Bovens, CDA party leader in the Senate and chair of Black Liberators in The Netherlands, plans to raise the removal of the panels in a possible introductory meeting with the new American ambassador to the Netherlands, Joe Popolo. 'What remains in the exhibition at the visitor centre really pays too little attention to the black liberators,' he told NRC.
