In 1821, Henry De la Beche and William Conybeare name a fragmentary fossil Plesiosaurus.
In December 1823, Mary Anning finds relatively complete fossil of Plesiosaurus.
In 1824, Conybeare used Annings fossil as the Type species, since it was far more complete than his originals.
For many years additional fossils were found in the Lias Group until the cessation of quarrying activities in the Lias Group, early in the 20th century.
Remembering my friend Richard Forrest, a marine reptile expert, with a week or two of marine reptile artworks. I'll start with this old acrylic painting, called The Wreck, which I created for Richard back in 2004.

That's not a skeleton of Plesiosaurus on the Plesiosaurus spread, though, it's clearly based on a skeleton of Rhomaleosaurus from Yorkshire (the one I did my PhD on, so there). And there's also something very odd going on with its anatomy.
