Did another water drop today, this one over 10 miles round-trip. This one had shown no use since it was last stocked. We split into two groups and the other group checked a drop up a different canyon that seems like it had a little bit of use, but not much. Nearby is yet another drop that has in fact been getting regular use. There are hundreds of combinations of routes through the mountains and the ones people use change, often without rhyme or reason, so we try to check all of them regularly.

A water drop. All the bottles are empty, probably transferred into the black bottles that the travelers carry. For the last couple years, the people who find the drops have been neatly stacking the bottles in a way that keeps them from blowing around.

Went out on another desert water drop today. Some of the sites have been completely used up and some not at all, despite those locations not being checked since April. It's always a process of guessing where people might be trying to cross the desert and need water. Anyway, saw a few cool things as usual.

Another #DesertAid water drop today. I added several more ghost shoes to the portfolio on my site.

Four of us went out and did water drops in the desert today. We restocked an established drop and then checked and restocked three experimental drops. Those hadn't been checked since March, so even though the water was gone, it was hard to tell how much use they were getting.

In the process, I added two new shoes to my #GhostShoes gallery in the OP.
(Sorry, can't add alt text. For some reason it locks up each time I try. Photos are two single shoes lying in the dirt..)

This whole area was formerly used for military training and you find evidence all over the place. On one of our exploratory hikes, we came across what appears to be a target glider. There is a steel shackle with a cable that appears to be how it was towed aloft. My assumption is that these are towed by other aircraft, let loose to glide and then shot at by fighter pilots in training.

Desert hike and water drop today. It was as much an exploratory trip as anything. Figuring out where to most efficiently leave water jugs is always a puzzle. One established drop on an obvious trail had shown zero use since it was placed in January. Another experimental-site drop had also shown zero use. And then we explored some new areas looking for possible migrant routes through the desert, but found nothing definitive.

Desert water drop day. Four of us did a ~5 mile round trip hike to spots on known migrant trails in the desert.

One drop, the most easily-accessed one, was completely gone. Milk crates used to protect water bottles, screw-top buckets used for food and socks, everything, gone. This is most likely Park Service volunteer crews who have been instructed to remove any water drops they find. Militias or hostile Border Patrol agents are more likely to slash the jugs and leave everything there.

The other drop, further over rough terrain and hidden in a tight draw, showed signs of human use, though a number of jug lids were pierced by animals. Javelina can't break the PET bottles, but they can chew through the caps.

We use milk crates to protect the bottles, but the last crew to visit left more than would fit under the crates.

Went out on a water drop yesterday, leaving supplies for migrants in the desert and wrote a short blog post about it.

With all the news about asylum seekers at the border, it's important to remember that those not eligible for asylum still attempt to cross the 50-70 miles of dangerous Arizona desert. Hundreds of human remains are found here each year.

Being seasonal and catering to outdoor, sun grown cultivators, we typically sell out around August 1st and close up shop till spring.

Once the last plants are sold (or composted as the case may be), I will head back to Arizona to work on #HumanitarianAid and #DesertAid along the U.S.-Mexico border, as well as continue my #paragliding training and #StormChasing photography.

Supporting us and the licensed small farms that buy plants from us allows me to do the desert aid work in the off season and supports our 6 employees to be able to have significant off-season free time as well. Where you buy your weed and weed plants matters!

If you're a licensed farm, be sure to contact us for early season pre-orders for 2024. If you're a personal-use grower, be sure to sign up on our mailing list to be notified about sales and so on. https://www.planthumboldt.com/email-list-sign-up/
