#DeadTrees still being useful
There’s something hypnotic about the desert at sunrise.
Silence, the silhouettes of ancient trees and the first light of day create a landscape that feels almost otherworldly. Moments like these stay with you forever.

The pilot GeoLabel from @unifreiburg presented at #NFDI4EarthPlenary2025 takes interactive annotations of geospatial data beyond fixed tiles to labeling the entire dataset + sampling with #AI.

Features are soon to be integrated and published in https://deadtrees.earth/ - an open database for accessing, contributing, analyzing, and visualizing remote sensing-based tree mortality data with crowdsourced reference data (RGB) by drones.

🌳🔒 Apparently, even dead trees are more secure than your browsing habits, storing carbon while you can't even store a webpage. 🍂📴 Maybe the real reason they're so good at keeping carbon is because they're not busy fighting with server errors. 🙄

Dead trees keep surprisingly large amounts of carbon out of atmosphere

Living trees absorb carbon, aiding climate change mitigation. But what role do dead trees play in carbon storage? UVM researchers found that large, downed trees in streams tie up tremendous stores of carbon—and this pool of carbon storage is growing over time. Moreover, large trees in streamside forests proved important for recruiting carbon into streams over time—reflecting the environmental value of big, old trees.
