@cassolotl @[email protected] yeah... Basically a Sneakernet that only needs some nice, easy to use tooling to automate it

  • Personally, I'd consider installing #DataMule-like packs onto vehicles like Buses that get solar-powered and send their packages off via WiFi / IrDA-VFIR / LiFi / RONJA once they get ping'd or reach certain locations.

@[email protected] so basically a #Sneakernet system where everyone just has messages and files fully encrypted and they get manually transported point-to-point in a decentralized mesh topology? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sneakernet Makes sense... This is basically how #Journalists get footage from #NorthKorea and how reporters do get footage out if places like that and #Iran…

Infosec.Space

@delta so yeah, #deltaChat does proper #E2EE with #SelfCustody in a #decentralozed, #SelfHosting capable fashion.

  • Whilst one may argue that #IMAP & #SMTP as well as #PGP/MIME were never "designed" for that, they do work reliably, don't require much cooperation (cuz even the strictest #CGNAT allows #eMail!) and can be transparently shoved through #VPN|s & @torproject / #Tor without much fuss.

Plus the "store & forward" architecture of #eMail lends itself to #AsynchronousCommunication, making it a good option when people need to "keep it brief"...

  • Add to that existing technologies like "#DataMule" style units to provide almost-#airgapped communities with "high bandwith, high lantency" connections as well as #SATCOM, I'd not be surprised if delta chat would work excellent everywhere on the planet - regardless if using #Iridum in #Antarctica, 10GBit/s FTTH in Sweden or uucp in Western Sahara.

@adisonverlice I mean, I could see something like an #IrDA or #BLE / #WiFi thingy that basically exchanges packages kinda like a bulk delivery that one just slaps onto a device.

  • Kinda the #DataMule idea some folks suggested to do with like( informal) (mini)bus services in the global south to get large amounts of data to areas that have no internet or only slow narrowband connectivity at best.

A ground-based alternative to #BlockstreamSatellite would be kinda cool espechally since they use #Shitcoin (#Bitcoin) and transfer of data is just absurdly expensive by pricing.

@adisonverlice @alecm @torproject @digitalcourage in terms of #Sneakernets and #DataMule infrastructure the questions one needs to ask beforehand are the big W-Questions:

  • Why? (What purpose?)
  • Where? (Which location/positions do you want to serve?)
  • When? (What regularity of intervals do you expect? A one-off drive shipment is not considered a sneakernet!)
  • What? (What amount if traffic? What kind of traffic? What media & which setup is intended to be used? What's the budget like? What tech does it need to be compatible with? What't the ingress/egress pipeline going to be?)

That sort of thing, you know...

Cuz a decentralized physical backup provider in Germany, a physical data exchange between banks.in the USA and an underground journalist network in North Korea will have conflicting answers and requirements.

  • Cuz what may seem to be normal amd accepted behaviour or due process in one case is suicidal in the latter.

So sadly no I'm not aware of an audio guide but in theory just shittling storage between two points is a beginning.

  • To make it a real net, one would have to "route" the data or rather storage media somehow.

@[email protected] @[email protected] @[email protected] @[email protected] Hey by the way. Is there a youtuber audio that would demonstrate how to start using sneakernet? I remember you said USB drives could be tampered with which is true. But is there any way to do this?

My friend @emptywheel is always saying, "Don't be a data mule for Trump! Don't disseminate OBVIOUSLY FALSE claims verbatim!"

So, to remind journalists NOT to do that, I pulled this clip from "Francis Covers the Big Town" where reporter Donald O'Connor and Francis the Talking Mule confront another newspaper reporter who has become a disgrace to his profession.
