**For the benefit of those who are less techy or may not know about the ways we can deal with personal identity data.**
Personal digital ID - a hot topic in the UK atm.
Many people and companies are working on systems to provide secure ways to hold our personal identity info. Some include wider profiles like our job, interests, hobbies etc. Some are OPEN SOURCE and part of a diverse ecosystem of data interoperability (you can use the same data POD (personal online data). Bluesky is active this landscape with their 'ATProto' personal data approach, and the Fediverse with the more versatile 'ActivityPub' user profile. There is also the WWW3 standards Solid project, and other Open Social Protocols (listed on the Solid project wikipedia page linked below).
Of course, just like IT sysadmins who provided website CMS at universities a decade ago, the UK govt thinks it needs walled garden private enterprise to partner with. They will spend probably ten times the money going down that route (just like universities did). This is old fashioned and not what other large national/territorial entities will be doing.

These open source systems are robust and based on the idea that only you can own and control your data. Though the data may be held centrally on (for example civic servers or other server companies who provide a Slid POD) it cannot be accessed by them. Im researching into this a lot more in coming days :)

@Sempf @stinerman please forgive my ignorance, it strikes me that the “public ledger” element of any blockchain inherently means what people do isn’t so private in the fullest sense, unless someone goes out of their way to totally shield their interactions with it from their real identity, right?
Isn’t that a dicey foundation for a social network that real people want to interact on without big brother extraordinary renditioning them?
I may well be missing how this works.
The "People's Bid for TikTok" website, supposedly with the goal of moving it to #DSNP, has follow buttons for TikTok, Instagram, X, Facebook and LinkedIn. But not DNSP. Count me confused.
It also should have ActivityPub/Mastodon and Bluesky, and perhaps more so than those closed social networks.
DSNP's creators acknowledge web standards, including the one created for the fediverse;
"Our work already builds on the existing core Internet and web protocols, and leverages great work from a variety of open source projects, including the W3C ActivityPub and Decentralized Identifier Specification. Over time, the protocol could also give these projects access to the compounding network effects that result from a public, shared social graph."
Here's another one that I found through a link to MeWe;
"In 2022, we made the strategic decision to move to the blockchain and incorporate the Decentralized Social Networking Protocol (DSNP), an open internet protocol released by the Project Liberty Foundation. The foundation, launched in 2021 by Frank McCourt, and Frequency Labs, is part of the $500 million Project Liberty initiative, aimed at creating a better internet and a healthier digital ecosystem."
