Joutsenen "hampaat" – "Teeth" of the swan

Niin kuin kakki tiedämme, linnut ovat dinosauruksia (https://fi.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linnut). Ja ihmeellistä on, kuinka ne ovat evoluution myötä kehittyneet niin erilaisiksi: suurista monimetrisistä strutseista pikkuruisiin tulitikun kokoisiin kolibreihin. Ruokapuolikin on hyvin vaihteleva, laulujoutsenilla pääasiassa kasvisravintoa, vaikka varmaan proteiinipitoistakin menee välillä nokkaan. Nokka on muotoutunut ravintolähteiden mukaan: esim. petolinnuilla on lyhyt terävä pilkkomiseen ja kahlaajilla pitkä ohut nokka syvältä kaivamiseen. Hampaita ei linnuilla ole, vaan nokka ja sen sarveismuodostumat hoitavat ruuan käsittelyn ja paloittelemisen. Ruuan pieneksi jauhamisen hoitaa vatsalaukun takaosassa oleva lihasmaha eli kivipiira.

As we all know, birds are dinosaurs (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bird). And the amazing thing is how they have evolved to be so different: from large ostriches that are several meters long to tiny matchstick-sized hummingbirds. Their feeding is also very varied, the whooper swans mainly eat vegetarian food, although I guess they also eat protein-rich food from time to time. The beak is shaped according to food sources: e.g. birds of prey have a short, sharp beak for chopping, and waders have a long, thin beak for digging deeply. Birds do not have teeth, but the beak and its ridge formations handle the processing and cutting of food. The food is ground into small pieces by the muscular stomach, or gizzard, located at the back of the stomach.

Kun ne jatkavat levähdyspaikalta takaisin pesimäseuduilleen, edellisen vuoden poikasten on löydettävät omat reviirinsä. Emot ajavat ne tiehensä ruvetessaan rakentamaan uutta pesää ja usein nuoret linnut parveutuvat omaksi ryhmäkseen. Sukukypsiksi ne tulevat 4-5 vuoden iässä. Tämä poikanen oli yksin emojen ja parven kanssa, mitähän perheen muille poikasille on tapahtunut?

When whooper swans continue from the resting place back to their nesting areas, the previous year's chicks must find their own territory. Parents drive them away when they start building a new nest and often young birds flock to their own group. They reach sexual maturity at the age of 4-5 years. This chick was alone with the parents and flock, I wonder what has happened to the other chicks in the family?
