Kun laulujoutsenten pesimäkosteikko on suurelta osin jäässä, linnut lentävät järvelle syömään. Avannon pomoilevat kyhmyjoutsenet ovat ottaneet monien saapuneiden joutsenten kanssa yhteen ja karkottaneet ne veden ääreltä. Tulevat pesimäreviirit ovat tärkeitä, ja kilpailijat pidetään poissa. Ehkä taisto on jo käyty näiden parien välillä (ehkä vuosia sitten) ja laulujoutsenet eivät ole kyhmyjoutsenten suurentelevista uhkailueleistä moksiskaan. Ja laulujoutsenilla on yksi erityisen tehokas taistelukeino: hurjan iso ääni!

When the nesting wetland of whooper swans is largely frozen, the birds fly to the lake to eat. The mute swans that are bossing the ice hole have clashed with many of the swans that have arrived and driven them away from the water. Future nesting territories are important, and competitors are kept away. Maybe the battle has already taken place between these pairs (maybe years ago) and the whooper swans are not at all bothered by the grandiose threatening poses of the mute swans. And whooper swans have one particularly effective means of fighting: their incredibly loud voice!

🦢 Mute swan preening its feathers 🇩🇪
📝 To get this shot, I kept creeping closer little by little, taking 3–4 photos before starting over from the beginning. The swan was so engrossed that it didn’t notice me. This isn’t a cropped photo. In the end, I crept back out again.
ℹ️ The mute swan (Cygnus olor) grows up to 1.6 meters long and can have a wingspan of up to 2.4 meters. They feed mainly on aquatic plants and small animals, such as mussels.

🦢 Höckerschwan putzt sich raus 🇩🇪
📝 Für dieses Foto habe ich mich immer wieder einen Schritt herangepirscht, 3-4 Fotos gemacht und von vorne. Der Schwan war so sehr mit sich beschäftigt, dass er mich nicht gemerkt hat. Das ist kein Crop. Am Ende wieder zurück gepirscht.
ℹ️ Der Höckerschwan (Cygnus olor) wird bis zu 1,60 Meter lang und erreicht dabei eine Spannweite von bis zu 2,40 Meter. Er ernährt sich vor allem von Pflanzen, die im Wasser leben, und kleinen Tieren, wie Muscheln. Markant ist der Höcker über dem Schnabel, woher der Schwan seinen Namen hat.
