It’s back to work next week, so I’m holding onto the holiday vibe and returning to the Greek islands for this week’s
#ThursdayBooksandBeer. I’m continuing my Charmian Clift binge with her 1964 novel, Honour’s Mimic, just republished this year after being out of print for a long time. Like her two memoirs, this is set on a Greek island amongst sponge divers. I’ve accompanied it with an American Brown Ale from Inner North Brewing with the rather beguiling name ‘Come To the Forest… For Here is Rest’. Griffin is reading William Dalrymple’s latest book, The Golden Road: How Ancient India Transformed the World, and drinking a ‘Frenchy Pale’. “It was a vertiginous place, what with the mountain rushing up above and the square or oblong roof-tops rushing away below, and the harbour at the bottom so flat and small, with the boats spread like a flock of mallards come in to rest.”
