I went to a screening of the movie counted out, on the intersection of math literacy and systemic injustice, it also showcase a few alternatives with organisations going to school to teach math in a different way. It got me angry, and hopeful.

Counted Out

Counted Out is a math documentary that investigates the biggest crises of our time—political polarization, racial and economic inequity, a global pandemic, and climate change—through an unexpected lens: math.

Counted Out
I went to a showing for the film #CountedOut yesterday and it was really perfect. As someone who grew up in poor in the south in a refugee city, I experienced a lot of systemic and cultural force pushing me away from STEM and #math .Being white and cis I had privileges but I was poor first and foremost. I experienced math being taught as memorization, not exploration. People were told they "just aren't math people"- especially my black peers. I saw peers tell each other that's "white people shit" regarding chemistry, math, physics, etc and regardless of race, most people treated those interested in math/science as if that interest made them selfish or "better-than-thou".
Despite that being my lived experience, I am learning to code in Python, cybersecurity, FOSS software, chemistry, and math. I like fuzzy logic, Post's lattice, and proofs. I'm learning set theory, boolean logic, graph theory, lattice theory, and more. I have seen how math is used to exclude 'others' from understanding power. We NEED change.

"Ultimately it’s a film that poses a question fundamental to #democracy: if we can’t understand a system that governs us, how much power do we actually have?"
