โ€œ #Salinas Highโ€™s mountain bike team rides the Rec Trail all night and day, with little rest in-between,โ€ by
Erik Chalhoub, #MontereyCountyNow

"With the 24-hour ride, Assistant Coach Cathy Weidemann says it takes the students out of their comfort zone, and allows them to do something many have never done before: ride a bike in the middle of the night."

Often weโ€™ve communicated with other #BikeAdvocates by phone, or online, long before meeting in person. That was the case with Paola Berthoin of Carmel Valley, and it was such a joy to meet her face to face on April 17 at the Fridays #FarmersMarket in Monterey (https://bikemonterey.org/tips-for-tourists/food-for-all).

Paola, an #artist, has biked 20,267 miles, mostly local miles. For Paola, her bike is โ€œa perfect alternative mode of #transportation!โ€

BTW, we share her concernโ€”and that of #CalBikeโ€”"Donโ€™t Punish E-Bikes for the E-Moto Problemโ€; take action: https://www.calbike.org/ab1557ab1942/

Those of you who followed @bikemonterey back when we were on the bird site, 2009-2022, may recall hearing Paola's name from us there, or on our website (e.g., https://bikemonterey.org/wp-content/uploads/26-Jan-2022-update-Hwy-1-Carmel-photos-and-advocacy-by-Paola-Berthoin.pdf on https://bikemonterey.org/resources/bicycle-advocacy-what-you-can-do).

Born in #London, England, she came to Carmel Valley in 1965 with her mother and three sisters. Learn more about Paola Fiorelle Berthoin: https://www.paolafiorelleberthoin.com/about

#SeaOtterClassic in #MontereyCounty, has a surprising new twist this yearโ€”no longer just about #bicycling.

History: Sea Otter Classic began in Monterey County in 1991, known the first two years as the Laguna Seca Challenge. It grew from a single day of bicycle racing to become a four-day Celebration of #Cycling. Sea Otter in #Monterey County is regarded as the #bicycle worldโ€™s premiere festival and one of the worldโ€™s largest. After more than 30 years of local ownership, SOC was acquired by Life Time, as announced summer 2021.

In 2026, under Life Time, that new twist. Per SOC: "Sea Otter Classic Trail #Run, scheduled for Saturday morning. #Runners can choose between a 17K (10.6 miles) course for experienced trail athletes and a 5K (2.8 miles) course designed for beginners, families and casual runners. Both races finish on the legendary Laguna Seca Raceway track, offering scenic views of the surrounding trails and Fort Ord landscape. Strollers are welcome on the 5K course.โ€
