Came back to Delhi to find that all my posters had been taken down. I didn’t even get any calls from them…

How do I get them to stick around? Or do I just keep putting them back up? 🤔

Was talking to someone the other day about theatre. “I think of hosting mapping parties to be similar to doing a theatre production,” I said. But - rather thoughtlessly - I added, “Organizing mapping parties is easier. It doesn’t matter if one or two members of your team don’t turn up. In theatre, a single unavailable actor can jeopardize the whole show.”

On second thoughts, that’s not true at all. Organizing mapping parties is identical to doing theatre. I’ve been in parties where everyone was new and I was the only mentor, and I’ve been in parties where I had plenty of mentors to rely on. I get run ragged in the former - it’s a bit like doing a solo act, you never have a moment’s rest.

Wish I could afford a trackball. I refuse to buy a unrepairable landfill fodder mouse…but mapping with a laptop trackpad is a special kind of hell.* (Also, mice aren’t as ergonomic, need a flat and even surface to work, and need more desk space.)

*That’s partly why I map with Vespucci so much…but there are times when JOSM is simply better. Like drawing rectangles, or drawing terraced buildings, or adding public transport routes.

There was so much to map in Madurai that I eventually gave up on my usual standards of granular changesets and detailed changeset comments. 😅

Thank glob for @vespucci_editor ‘s autogenerated changeset tags, though!

I was planning to crowdfund the poster designs separately, but since someone sent that $52 (₹4711) donation…here they are 🙂

After the May 1 incident last year, I designed some posters to involve the local community in mapping, and to raise awareness about OpenStreetMap. As a side-effect, I also hoped that people would trust local participants more than me, making it safer for me to map.

Today I finally got around to printing them. Now to put them up at nearby shops and apartments. (Thanks to @niya / @[email protected] for footing the bill of ₹600 🙂)

I’ve been sick the past few days, so today I’ve been engaging in a form of “OSM doomscrolling”…lying in bed, panning around in CoMaps, and using Vespucci to add missing things, fix problems, and improve building geometries.

Wish someone would hire me to do this stuff 😓

Are my contributions a valuable addition to OpenStreetMap? If so, please support me on Liberapay, or see other ways to support me. Even $5 / ₹500 per week would be a big help!

We recently had a realization and I can’t believe it took us so long to think of it.

For nearly all our mapping parties, the meeting spots have been public parks.

And here’s the realization - women do not consider public parks to be a safe space!

If people are going to meet Internet strangers, it’s safer to meet in cafés (which tend to be busier) than in a public park (which tend to be relatively cut off from crowds, especially in the hours we meet).

So, going forward, we’ll try to meet in cafés, or in any kind of seating situated in a busy area (even a bus stop with a shelter and benches) instead of parks.
