Today, Paul Vrieze successfully defended his doctoral dissertation titled "Resisting the Return of Military Rule. Coalition Building, Armed Struggle and Governance by Myanmar's Spring Revolution Movement" at the University of Gothenburg.

It's been an honour to have been part of Paul's journey as co-supervisor. Very proud of his achievement!

Listen to Paul Passavant talk masterfully about how and why protest policing has gotten more violent over the past few decades, and how this relates to the harsh crackdowns we've seen on campus protests over the past year.

For the 3rd episode of our Lab's podcast, I talked with two of the organizers of the weekly cycle of marches past several SCOTUS justices' homes in 2022 about the what, why, and how of those actions, and the intense blowback they got from the right.

Experimenting with using a dashboard to provide up-to-date stats and interactive event-level info on the pro-Palestine movement in the U.S. since October 7.

Pro-Palestine Protests in the U.S. Since Oct. 7, 2023

This was clever.

Extinction Rebellion Boston activists opposed to the construction of new fossil fuel infrastructure protested in the MA State House today by mooning senators from the gallery with the message "Stop passing gas" spelled out on their butt cheeks.

Disruptive, funny, and tittilating — a great combo for getting media attention. And a nice addition to the repertoire of contentious collective action.

Climate Activists Moon MA State Legislature, Demanding They "Stop Passing Gas"

On Thursday June 15, eight climate activists from Extinction Rebellion Boston (XR) mooned legislature with the message "STOP PASSING GAS" written on their backsides, demanding that the Massachusetts government immediately ban all new fossil fuel infrastructure and stop ongoing construction of new projects.

Nice overview of some of the tactical innovations protesters are using to try to work around—and, in some cases, poke fun at—China's Great Firewall.

Dating apps and Telegram: How China protesters are defying authorities

Opponents of China's anti-COVID measures are resorting to dating apps and social media platforms blocked on the mainland to evade censors, spread the word about their defiance and strategy, in a high-tech game of cat and mouse with police.

Protest tactics are hard. Movement strategy is hard. Organizing is really hard.

If you're going to jump into convos about contentious politics in good faith, it helps to keep those points near the front of your mind at all times.

And if you're just trolling or sniping, well...
