The #OttomanEmpire tackled crisis with a coup on #ThisDayInHistory in 1876, replacing Sultan #Abdülaziz with Murad V, who supported their plans for a #ConstitutionalMonarchy but was physically unwell. He was in turn deposed after 93 days in a disastrous decision for the empire...

A former Supreme Court Justice, UN Human Rights Commissioner, and War Crimes Tribunal participant is a strong pick for Governor General.

Louise Arbour is to be named Vice-Regal by Prime Minister Carney, replacing Mary Simon after her 5 year term.

I know Mary Simon attracted legitimate criticism for not being fluent in both official languages. But she was fluent in her own Indigenous language (Inuk), and that in itself was very powerful. She brought her lived experience as an Inuk elder and stateswoman from the remote Arctic shores of Québec to the highest office of the land. She did her job with honour and respect and I believe that is how she should be remembered.

I hope when the next Indigenous GG is appointed, that they are fluent in English, French and their own language... or even better... that it is less of a controversy because we are all more secure in our individualities within Canada.

The English #BillOfRights gained royal ascent on #ThisDayInHistory in 1689. A key part of the #GloriousRevolution, a coup in which the #Stuart monarchy was toppled, it built on #JohnLocke's ideas and enshrined the #SupremacyOfParliament, making Britain a #ConstitutionalMonarchy.

The solution is simple: change standing orders to allow a motion to revoke #royaltitles. Parliament has legislated before to replace a King, in 1688 and 1936. Sacking a disgraced son of a former monarch is a relatively trivial matter, and the case against #PrinceAndrew is clearcut.

The UK claims to be as #ConstitutionalMonarchy, so it needs a constitutional process to remove a disgraced royal. The #Starmer government's failure to act is creating an avoidable #ConstitutionalCrisis.

#NoKings! (Except for #constitutionalmonarchy, which seems a little more effective in preserving #democracy … at least in #NorthAmerica … )
