In 1937, he joined the Connolly Column (Colún Uí Chonghaile) of the International Brigade and fought in the Spanish Civil War. He was captured in 1938 and released in February 1939. Maurice Levitas was born at Warren Street, in the Portobello area of Dublin on 1 February 1917. He was known to his family and friends as "Morry".
