In a mountainous region in Italy where internet access is not possible for many, locals interconnect in the valleys between the mountains using WiFi antennas connected to routers running libremesh (and some other FOSS based layers). Technology often gives us the illusion of being independent, as if we did not depend on geography or food. Here, technology actually *creates* connections, and makes visible how much we do depend on our environment and on other people.

Oswego County, NY officials are celebrating the award of a new $26 million New York State grant to bring affordable fiber access to long-underserved rural communities in the northwestern part of the state. Oswego County will own the finished open access network and lease the fiber to Internet Service Providers (SPs), including Empire Access.
