Immediatamente è partita la ricerca della madre, francese, che li aveva abbandonati. E oggi la donna è stata rintracciata e fermata a Fatima, oltre 120 chilometri da Lisbona.
La gendarmeria portoghese ha annunciato che la madre, 41 anni, è stata fermata insieme a un uomo di 55 la cui nazionalità non è stata specificata in un primo momento.
Secondo i media portoghesi, la donna e il suo compagno hanno bendato i bambini facendo finta di voler giocare. Hanno lasciato loro zaini contenenti cibo e acqua, ma non documenti, e se ne sono andati. Il procuratore francese Jean Richert ha riferito che la famiglia della donna, di Colmar nell'Alto Reno, ne aveva denunciato la scomparsa l'11 maggio.

La stampa lusitana ha raccontato che a trovare i fratellini nei pressi di Comporta è stato un automobilista di nome Alexandre Quintas. Li ha fatti salire in macchina e li ha portati nella pasticceria gestita dalla sua famiglia, poi ha avvertito le autorità. "Gli abbiamo chiesto se gli piaceva il gelato e abbiamo dato loro qualcosa da mangiare e dei giocattoli per tenerli occupati", ha raccontato Quintas ai giornali locali.
Un medico del posto che parla francese è stato il primo a farsi raccontare cos'era successo. La più grandicella ha spiegato che erano arrivati in auto, erano stati bendati con la scusa di cercare un giocattolo e quando si sono tolti il fazzoletto dagli occhi la madre e la macchina erano sparite.La donna rischia ora accuse di abbandono di minore e violenza domestica.

The Rescue
Portuguese print media reported that a motorist named Alexandre Quintas found the two brothers near Comporta. He got them into his car and took them to his family's bakery, then alerted the authorities. "We asked them if they liked ice cream and gave them something to eat and toys to keep them occupied," Quintas told local newspapers.
A local doctor who speaks French was the first to be told what had happened. The older one explained that they had arrived in a car, were blinded with the excuse of looking for a toy, and when they removed the handkerchief from their eyes, the mother and the car disappeared. The woman now faces charges of child abandonment and domestic violence.
