Brisbane Master Composter Course: celebrating community, mourning loss, and looking forward

Originally published by Clytie Binder at SoilSearchingDiaries #UrbanAgriculture #CommunityCompost #FoodSecurity Recently, I had the privilege of visiting the beautiful Baroona Farm and compost hub to speak with this year's Master Composter cohort about the LOCCAL – Local Community Compost Alliance – Australia (LOCCAL). Standing among the thriving garden beds and well-tended compost bays, watching engaged participants learn the art and science of composting, I felt a familiar mix of pride and purpose that comes from seeing community composting take root.

Community composting - Brighton and Hove Food Partnership

We set-up and support community compost schemes where you can take your raw fruit and vegetable waste, tea bags, coffee grounds, cardboard and paper.

Please remember to remove your fruit stickers.

No one needs this in our compost!

Either take them off at the shop (maybe find somewhere convenient to stick them), or take them off when you put your groceries away at home. Much easier than digging through soggy peels and food scraps, and much better chance they won’t end up as toxins in our local food systems for generations to come!

This month we have been running a _comparative_ radish test... No control group, so we aren't checking the viability of the seed batch, just the relative properties of compost from various sites across our compost network, based on what they sprout!

Interesting to observe how they hold water, the number of seedlings each, how healthy or large the foliage grows, and any other seeds or weeds that germinate.

Anything else we could look for?

@ibikebrighton am working with #RealJunkFood project to create a #CommunityGrowing and #CommunityCompost space on the lawns opposite to work with thier pay-as-you-feel cafe opening at the new centre. Great project - fine people 🙂

Hey this looks kind of cool.

You can put your foodwaste in someone else’s compost bin / worm farm / chicken coup, or put your bin up to accept waste from other people. Neighbourhood waste recycling! 😀
